Centuries
of meditation and study of the Hebrew letters have yielded rich and powerful
theories and practices. Students of Kabbalah, the Jewish mystical tradition,
understand these letters as uniquely individual spiritual forces. When
combined into words, they have the power to create or destroy.
Alef is
the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It is composed of three Hebrew
letters, an upper and lower "yud" (the short lines) separated
and united by one "vav" (the longer diagonal line).
This is
the secret of the image in which God and the angels created humanity.
Bridging Heaven and Earth, acting as a channel between the Divine and
Animal.
The Hebrew
word alef also has several meanings (similar to the relationship between
the English letter "c," and the English words "see,"
and "sea"). Alef is the word for "One thousand," "Teaching,"
"Master," and "Oxen."
Alef is
the first of all countable numbers--its value being "One." |
